Davis Research Foundation (DRF) was established in 1988 as a non-profit 501 (c) 3 corporation. Our mission is to research, develop, and broadly disseminate effective counseling and teaching methods to resolve dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

One of our primary goals is to address and relieve school problems suffered by dyslexic children. We fund and support public school programs which provide parent education, teacher training, consultations, and materials to pilot, test and implement dyslexia prevention and correction methods.

Through research, we hope to develop effective teacher training programs throughout the world, in order to reach potentially dyslexic children before they develop identifiable difficulties.

Another DRF goal is to establish effective programs for adult literacy.

What are some projects that DRF has funded?

DRF provides grants only to public schools interested in implementing programs aimed at prevention, intervention, or correction of dyslexia or other related learning problems. Some of the projects DRF has funded are:

Mission San Jose Elementary School.
In 1993, with the help of the Hansen Family Foundation, a dyslexia prevention program pilot study was begun in selected classes of Kindergarten through Grade 2 children at an elementary school in the Fremont Unified School District in California. All students in selected classrooms received instruction using Davis Symbol Mastery, from introduction of the alphabet and numerals, through learning punctuation and elementary reading words. We are continuing to fund this program, providing money for teacher training and the purchase of curriculum materials.
Preliminary data shows that all children in these classes have benefited, not just dyslexic children. There has been an overall increase in basic language and math skills amongst entire classes of Kindergarten (ages 4-5) through Grade 2 (ages 6-7) children.
Another two years of comparison study, with control groups, is required to compile statistical evidence for the impact on dyslexia prevention in the early school years.

Grimmer Elementary School.
Last year, we began funding a second school in Fremont, California -- Grimmer School  -- to pilot a dyslexia remediation program in selected Grades K-1 and 3-6 classes. Now entering its second year, this program is staffed by a core group of six teachers and two instructional aides, who are working with the support of their principal to carry out this study.
Brisbane Unified School District.
In 1996, we provided Brisbane Unified School District with funds to train three teachers in Davis Symbol Mastery, in order to incorporate this method into their district special education programs.

Who can apply to DRF for grants?

We presently give grants to teachers, school districts, public schools, and school organizations in California that are willing to pilot study and/or implement dyslexia prevention, remediation and correction programs based on Davis methods.

DRF also accepts a small number of grant requests for other, compatible purposes. For example, in 1996 we provided funding to San Francisco Unified School District for a presentation by Dr. Linda Silverman on visual-spatial learning styles among gifted/learning disabled students to parents and teachers.
